Model Overview

The MG eHS is a plug-in hybrid compact SUV introduced in 2019 by the MG brand under SAIC Motor, built on the foundations of the petrol-powered MG HS. The model was officially launched on 22 November 2019 at the 19th Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition across three variants, with post-subsidy prices ranging from RM189,800 to RM219,800. Positioned as a "European strictly selected global quality plug-in hybrid SUV", the MG eHS represents the brand's third new energy model following the MG 6 New Energy and the all-electric MG EZS, and marks MG's first plug-in hybrid SUV built for global export, with subsequent rollouts in overseas markets such as the United Kingdom and Singapore. Dimension-wise, the MG eHS measures 4,574 mm in length, 1,876 mm in width, and 1,685 mm in height, with a 2,720 mm wheelbase, placing it squarely in the standard C-segment SUV footprint.
Design Language
On the exterior styling front, the MG eHS carries over the design language of the standard petrol MG HS, adopting a 360° pure surfacing design philosophy akin to Porsche that uses flowing curves instead of sharp character lines to create a multi-layered light and shadow effect. Up front, it features a deeply sculpted "Starlight Field" dot-matrix grille flanked by "Hunting Eye" LED headlights, blending semicircular "London Eye" design motifs with a contemporary aesthetic. Round the back, dual exhaust tailpipes and sculpted surfacing give the rear end a muscular profile. Exterior colour choices include a bespoke "Copenhagen Blue" shade dedicated to the electrified model, complemented by a "500PHEV" emblem on the lower right of the tailgate to signify its plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Inside, the MG eHS adopts what the carmaker calls an "Immersive Cockpit" wraparound layout, with the most notable addition being an exclusive "Monaco Blue + White" dual-tone interior theme that accentuates its electrified identity. The cabin is generously appointed with soft-touch materials, accented by metallic trim and gloss black inserts, delivering a marked upgrade in perceived quality over earlier MG models. Cabin highlights include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch floating touchscreen infotainment display, a flat-bottom three-spoke leather steering wheel, and integrated sports seats, with higher-end variants gaining a BOSE premium audio system featuring eight speakers and a subwoofer. The centre console houses a newly designed electronic gear shifter, with a dedicated EV mode switch placed just to its lower left.
Powertrain and Performance
Powering the MG eHS is a plug-in hybrid setup comprising SAIC's "NetBlue" 20T Trophy centrally mounted direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine paired with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. The combustion engine produces 124 kW (169 PS) and 250 Nm of torque, while the electric motor generates 90 kW (122 PS) and 230 Nm, delivering a combined system output of 214 kW (291 PS) and 480 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the wheels via SAIC's second-generation 10-speed EDU intelligent electric drive transmission, which adopts a hair-pin flat-wire winding design and does away with the previous ISG motor to enhance motor efficiency and power density. Supplying the electric drive is a 16.6 kWh CATL ternary lithium-ion battery pack with active liquid cooling, providing an NEDC-rated pure electric range of 75 km. The SUV completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.6 seconds, stops from 100-0 km/h in around 36 metres, and returns a rated combined fuel consumption of just 1.3 L/100 km. On the charging and safety front, the MG eHS is among the first to comply with stringent 360° side-pole impact electrical safety standards, surpassing both Chinese national and European benchmarks.
Chassis and Handling
Under the skin, the MG eHS features a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup with a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. To compensate for the added kerb weight of the plug-in hybrid hardware, the suspension has been retuned for a firmer, more composed ride, with dampers reacting swiftly to road imperfections. Standard across the range is the XDS dynamic cornering control system integrated into the ESP architecture, which monitors vehicle dynamics and selectively brakes the inner wheels during cornering to quell understeer and sharpen cornering composure. Drive mode selections include Eco, Normal, Sport, and Super Sport, alongside a dedicated EV pure electric button on the centre console. Steering weighting remains light and user-friendly for urban driving, though body roll is still noticeable during aggressive manoeuvres due to the taller ride height and extra heft. Tyre-wise, the model showcased rolls on 235/50 R18 Michelin Primacy 3 ST rubbers, geared towards a quiet and comfortable ride.
Cabin and Equipment
The MG eHS is equipped as standard across the range with the updated Zebra Zhixing 3.0 operating system, linked to a 10.1-inch floating centre touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment software incorporates three key modules—AI Scenario Engine, Map Smart Engine, and Voice Fusion Engine—supporting customised AutoNavi navigation, smart parking, and connected refuelling, alongside lifestyle services like food delivery ordering, automated parking payments, and lane-level navigation. The AI-powered proactive voice assistant can distinguish between driver and front passenger voice prompts, while the suite of connectivity features includes smartphone app remote vehicle telematics, IoT cloud ecosystem services, and on-demand cloud infotainment. Creature comforts include a 1.19-square-metre panoramic sunroof with tilt-and-slide function, dual-zone automatic climate control, an onboard air purifier, rear air-con vents, heated front seats, smart keyless entry with push-start, and electronic parking brake with Auto Brake Hold. Aside from the base variant, all trims are fitted with a BOSE premium sound system. Boot space is practical and square, with 60:40 split-folding rear seats that expand cargo capacity to beyond 1,000 litres.
Safety and Driver Assistance
On the safety front, the MG eHS is the only vehicle in its class to comply with rigorous European regulations, including EU REACH, E-MARK certification, and ECE R100, adhering to strict European standards for eco-friendly materials, in-cabin air quality, and overall vehicle build integrity. Furthermore, it goes beyond Chinese national and European benchmarks by meeting 360° side-pole impact electrical safety requirements to safeguard the battery pack in a collision. Passive safety is bolstered by a high-strength body structure, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and hill descent control (HDC). Active safety comes courtesy of the MG PILOT advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), which bundles mainstream safety suites including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) for enhanced driving confidence.
Market Performance and Reception
Following its domestic launch in China, sales of the MG eHS were relatively subdued. Official records show that full-year deliveries in China reached just around 838 units in 2020. This was primarily attributed to fierce competition in the domestic PHEV SUV segment, the tapering of government new energy subsidies, and price sensitivity among local buyers towards premium PHEV pricing. Conversely, the MG eHS enjoyed a far more successful reception abroad. As MG's first PHEV SUV exported to Europe, the model charted remarkable sales milestones in markets like Poland. In 2025, MG emerged as the top-selling new energy vehicle brand in Poland with 13,800 units delivered, propelled by the MG eHS which topped the NEV model sales chart at 8,700 units. Blending British-inspired aesthetics, SAIC's second-generation PHEV powertrain technology, European-grade safety credentials, and competitive value, the MG eHS played an instrumental role in MG's global expansion roadmap. As of 2026, the model has been phased out in several key markets.
